Energy certificate – educational buildings and day care centres

Existing educational buildings (schools) and day care centres need an energy performance certificate (energiatodistus) when they are sold or rented out. In new construction, an energy certificate is required to obtain a building permit. Educational buildings and day care centres belong to building use category 6 (käyttötarkoitusluokka 6), in which the E-value (E-luku) limit for new buildings is 100. This means that the E-value must be 100 or lower for the building permit to be granted. It is a good idea to contact an energy consultant at an early stage of a construction project, so that the energy efficiency requirements can be met as cost-effectively as possible.
Energy report for educational buildings and day care centres
An energy report is needed when a large-scale renovation is being carried out on an educational building or a day care centre – or when an entirely new building in this use category is being built. The energy report (energiaselvitys) contains the energy certificate and two other documents – a summertime indoor temperature assessment and a heat loss balance calculation (lämpöhäviöiden tasauslaskelma). The summertime temperature assessment shows that the temperatures of the rooms do not rise too high during hot summer spells. The heat loss balance calculation, in turn, ensures that the basic solutions of the building are energy-efficient regardless of the form of heating energy.
Energy efficiency classes of educational buildings and day care centres
The energy efficiency class of schools and of other buildings in the use category of educational buildings and day care centres is determined on the basis of the E-value. The E-value is the energy efficiency figure stated in the energy certificate, which describes the building’s calculated energy consumption per unit of the building’s floor area.

In energy efficiency classification, energy class A is the best rating and G the worst. To obtain a building permit, educational buildings and day care centres are required to have an E-value of 100, which means that new educational buildings and day care centres are always at least in energy efficiency class B.
